Preparing for birth

Planning your baby's birth will help to ensure you have active involvement in the way your little one is born, so it’s important that you start thinking about your birth plan in this final stage of your pregnancy.
You’ll have lots of decisions to make leading up to the birth of your baby, and to help you create a birth plan that’s right for you and your family, we’ve provided some essential information on the different options available to you.

These days mum has much more choice about where and how to have her baby – a hospital birth, having baby at home, or even a water birth.
Once you have an idea about what you would like, discuss this with your GP or midwife early on in your pregnancy.  If you’d like a home birth or want to give birth in a pool, for example, this will have to be arranged in advance.

You should also talk everything through with your partner and anyone else who is going to be present at the birth to make sure that you are all happy with the arrangements.
